I tried to review what we had learned so far, but it was meager information. All we knew was that Benjamin had last been seen leaving the high school around 2:00pm on Wednesday. Every day that someone remained missing increased the likelihood that they would never be found.

“What do you think I should do?” I asked Hazel.

She flapped over to me and perched on my left knee. I was sitting on the couch, trying to send an email to the university, begging them to reconsider their decision, but I didn’t know what words to use to convince them, or even if I wanted to convince them. I knew I was terrible at magic, and no matter what I did, I would never be good enough.

“I think you should take a break and give me a freeze-dried lizard.” Hazel dug her claws into my skin to emphasize her point.

“Hazel,” I admonished and shook her off. “I’m serious. Benjamin is still missing.”

“What about the mysterious Jamie? Could he have taken him?”

I tapped my chin. “Maybe.”

Hazel tugged at a piece of my hair with her beak. “You should go back to the high school. That kid who bullies Benjamin sounds like bad news.”

As if on cue, my phone rang. Chase’s name popped up, and I ignored the small leap in my stomach at seeing it.

Weird.

“Hello?”

“Carly,” he began with no preamble. “I went back to that neighbor’s house last night to follow up. She said that she sometimes sees Qian’s car in the neighborhood. Do you want to come with me to the high school?”

Even though he didn’t mention ignoring the lead on Jamie, I took it as a sign that I should go, since Hazel had mentioned it as well.

“Sure.”

“I’ll come pick you up.”

Then he hung up.
